2 Refreshing Drinks for a Bloated Stomach (and What Really Helps)

A “flat stomach” detox drink is one of the most common promises online. No drink can remove belly fat. What some people really mean is a bloated stomach – and bloating has many causes, from swallowed air and certain foods to constipation. Below are two refreshing drinks you can enjoy, and practical tips that may actually help with bloating.

1. Grapefruit, Ginger and Apple Cider Vinegar Drink

Ingredients (1 glass)

  • 1 cup (240 ml) of grapefruit juice
  • 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 cm (½ inch) of fresh ginger, grated
  • Water and ice to top up

Stir everything together, top up with water and serve cold. Note: grapefruit interacts with many medicines – if you take regular medication, ask your pharmacist first.

2. Warm Lemon, Cumin and Ginger Tea

Ingredients (about 4 cups)

  • 4 cups (1 liter) of water
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 cm (½ inch) of fresh ginger, sliced
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey (optional)
  1. Bring the water to a boil with the cumin seeds and ginger.
  2. Simmer for 5–10 minutes and strain.
  3. Add the lemon juice and sweetener, and drink warm.

What actually helps with bloating

  • Eat slowly and avoid chewing gum and fizzy drinks, which add swallowed air.
  • Notice foods that trigger gas for you (for example beans, onions, some sweeteners) and adjust portions.
  • If constipation is part of the problem, increase fiber slowly and drink enough fluids.
  • Regular physical activity can help gas move through the gut.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if bloating is persistent or getting worse, or comes with pain, weight loss you can’t explain, blood in the stool, vomiting, or changes in your bowel habits.
