Turmeric Ginger Lemon Tea: Recipe and What the Research Really Says

Turmeric tea with ginger and lemon is a warm, golden drink with an earthy, slightly peppery taste. It is a comforting way to enjoy two popular spices. It does not detox your liver or cause weight loss, and the research on turmeric is less convincing than many websites suggest.

Turmeric Ginger Lemon Tea Recipe

Ingredients (1 large mug)

  • ½ tablespoon of ground turmeric (or about 2 cm / 1 inch of fresh turmeric, grated)
  • 2 cm (1 inch) of fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (about half a lemon)
  • 1 cup (250 ml) of water
  • A pinch of black pepper and honey to taste (optional)

How to make it

  1. Bring the water to a boil with the turmeric and ginger.
  2. Simmer gently for 5–10 minutes.
  3. Strain into a mug, add the lemon juice, a pinch of black pepper and honey if you like.
  4. Stir well before drinking, as turmeric settles at the bottom.

What the research says

  • Turmeric: its main compound, curcumin, has been studied for many conditions, but there is little reliable evidence that turmeric helps any health condition. The body absorbs curcumin poorly.
  • Liver “detox”: there is no good evidence that turmeric or any tea detoxes the liver. Turmeric supplements have actually been linked to rare cases of liver injury.
  • Ginger: may help with some types of nausea.

Cautions

  • Turmeric in normal food amounts is considered safe. High doses and supplements are different – talk to your doctor before taking them, especially if you have liver problems or take regular medicines.
  • Turmeric and ginger may not be suitable if you take blood-thinning medicines; ask your pharmacist.
  • Turmeric stains cups and clothes – rinse quickly.
